Why Teach?

Hello I’m Guadalupe Rivera and I am going into the teaching profession because I want to make a difference in this world, so I asked myself these three questions, “What do I value the most? What skills do I want to accentuate? And Where did it all begin?  By asking myself these questions I jumped back and forth for two years and landed right where I needed to be. In college, I am now identified as an EC-6 ESL Generalist and I’ll say it not only answers my three questions but explains a large portion of my life. When I was in elementary school, I was not exactly the teacher’s pet but I did spend a lot of my time in school. I always loved being involved in events that my school would put together at the time. It was fun for me until of course, I got older but that's a different story. Anyways, like I was saying I was those kids that you will see at the thanksgiving dinner event, but what sparked me was when I used to help out my 4th-grade teacher organize her classroom. During those years me and my 4th-grade teacher got along very well, we would bond over books that we have read, I would give her tips on how she could organize better, and she would give me tips on how I could improve in the core subjects that she taught, which we’re reading and social studies. So to say the least, yes I was motivated by a teacher who changed my life, and how did my 4th-grade teacher do that? Well, one day in class she told me “hey I think you should start taking your exams in English...you have been doing very well in-class assignments and quizzes and I sure think you are ready to take on the big one.” For so many years up until 4th grade I would take my TASKS and the pre-exam in Spanish and if it weren’t for my teacher believing in me I would still be insecure in communicating in English. This whole segment of my life answers the skills I want to accentuate, in this case, it is the English language and going beyond that by helping other English language learners feel comfortable reading and writing with the first largest language in the U.S. This is what I value the most: the education of others and how I deliver the experiences I have gained starting from the very beginning of my studies.

Educational aims

The subject matter I want to focus on is literature and writing for grades kinder through sixth grade. In my teaching career, I would like to start with the younger students so I can get a better idea of how the process of learning a new language works. Throughout the time I will like to expand further in terms of what grades and parts of the world I teach because I want to accentuate my expertise and help as many students as I possibly can. Lastly, my educational aims in terms of a specific setting I would like to teach at an area of lower-income students for the reason being that the schools in that area lack resources when it comes to ESL.
